Henry Hill [edit]
- Equally far back as I can call up, I always wanted to be a gangster. To me, being a gangster was better than being President of the Us. Fifty-fifty before I commencement wandered into the cabstand for an afterward-schoolhouse job, I knew I wanted to be a office of them. It was at that place that I knew that I belonged. To me, it meant existence somebody in a neighborhood that was full of nobodies. They weren't like everyone else. I mean, they did whatever they wanted. They double-parked in front of a hydrant and nobody always gave them a ticket. In the summer when they played cards all night, nobody ever called the cops.
- Paulie might've moved slow, merely information technology was merely because Paulie didn't have to move for everyone.
- He knew what went on at that cab stand up, and every once in a while I'd have to take a chirapsia. But by then I didn't care. The way I saw it everybody takes a beating sometime.
- Hundreds of guys depended on Paulie and he got a piece of everything they fabricated. And it was tribute, just like in the onetime country, except they were doing it here in America. And all they got from Paulie was protection from other guys looking to rip them off. And that's what it'south all about. That's what the FBI could never empathize. That what Paulie and the arrangement does is offer protection for people who tin can't go to the cops. That's it. That'south all. They're similar the police section for wiseguys.
- Ane twenty-four hours some of the kids from the neighborhood carried my mother's groceries all the way home. You know why? It was outta respect.
- For usa to alive whatsoever other way was nuts. Uh, to us, those goody-good people who worked shitty jobs for bum paychecks and took the subway to work every day and worried virtually their bills were dead. I mean they were suckers. They had no assurance. If we wanted something, nosotros just took it. If anyone complained twice they got hit and so bad, believe me, they never complained again.
- At present the guy'due south got Paulie as a partner. Any problems, he goes to Paulie. Trouble with the bill? He can go to Paulie. Trouble with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he tin can call Paulie. But now the guy's gotta come up upwardly with Paulie's money every week, no matter what. Business bad? "Fuck you, pay me." Oh, y'all had a fire? "Fuck you, pay me." Identify got hit past lightning, huh? "Fuck you lot, pay me." As well, Paulie could practice annihilation. Especially run upwards bills on the joint's credit. And why not? Nobody's gonna pay for it anyway. And every bit soon as the deliveries are fabricated in the front door, you lot move the stuff out the back and sell it at a discount. You lot take a two hundred dollar example of alcohol and you sell it for a hundred. It doesn't matter. It'south all profit. And then finally, when there'southward cypher left, when you lot can't borrow another buck from the depository financial institution or buy some other case of booze, you bust the joint out. You lite a match.
- For well-nigh of the guys, killings got to exist accepted. Murder was the only fashion that everybody stayed in line. Y'all got out of line, you got whacked. Everybody knew the rules. But sometimes, even if people didn't go out of line, they got whacked. I mean, hits just became a addiction for some of the guys. Guys would become into arguments over zippo and before you lot knew information technology, one of them was expressionless. And they were shooting each other all the time. Shooting people was a normal thing. It was no big deal. Nosotros had a serious problem with Billy Batts. This was really a touchy thing. Tommy'd killed a made guy. Batts was part of the Gambino crew and was considered untouchable. Earlier y'all could impact a made guy, y'all had to have a good reason. You had to have a sitdown, and you better get an okay, or you'd be the 1 who got whacked.
- Sat night was for wives, but Friday dark at the Copa was always for the girlfriends.
- See, y'all know when you think of prison, you get pictures in your mind of all those old movies with rows and rows of guys behind confined...Merely information technology wasn't like that for wiseguys. It really wasn't that bad. Excepting that I missed Jimmy. He was doing his time in Atlanta...I mean, everybody else in the joint was doing real time, all mixed together, living like pigs. Simply we lived alone. And we owned the joint.
- [subsequently the Lufthansa heist] It fabricated him ill to take to turn money over to the guys who stole it. He'd rather whack 'em. Anyhow, what did I intendance? I wasn't asking for anything and besides, Jimmy was making dainty coin with me through my Pittsburgh connections. [showing a montage of dead gangsters] Simply still, months subsequently the robbery they were finding bodies all over. [police surroundings a truck, open information technology to come across a dead man hanging on a hook like a meat husk] When they found Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen then strong information technology took them ii days to thaw him out for the autopsy.
- Y'all know, we e'er called each other goodfellas. Similar you said to, uh, somebody, "Yous're gonna like this guy. He's all right. He'due south a good fella. He's 1 of us." You empathize? We were goodfellas. Wiseguys. But Jimmy and I could never be made because nosotros had Irish blood. Information technology didn't even thing that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a crew yous've got to be ane hundred per cent Italian and then they can trace all your relatives back to the one-time country. Run across, information technology'southward the highest honor they can give you. It means you belong to a family and coiffure. It means that nobody can fuck around with you. It as well means you could fuck effectually with everyone simply as long as they aren't also a member. It's similar a license to steal. It's a license to do anything. As far every bit Jimmy was concerned with Tommy being made, it was like nosotros were all beingness made. We would now have ane of our ain as a member.
- [about Tommy's murder] It was revenge for Billy Batts, and a lot of other things. And at that place was nix that we could practise near it. Batts was a made man and Tommy wasn't. And we had to sit down nevertheless and take information technology. Information technology was among the Italians. It was real greaseball shit. They even shot Tommy in the face and then his mother couldn't give him an open coffin at the funeral.
- For a second, I idea I was expressionless, but when I heard all the noise I knew they were cops. Only cops talk that way. If they had been wiseguys, I wouldn't have heard a thing. I would've been dead.
- If you lot're function of a coiffure, nobody ever tells you that they're going to kill you lot. Information technology doesn't happen that way. There weren't any arguments or curses like in the movies. So your murderers come with smiles. They come every bit your friends, the people who have cared for you all of your life, and they always seem to come at a fourth dimension when you lot're at your weakest and almost in demand of their help.
- It was easy for all of united states to disappear. My house and cars were either registered in the name of my wife or my mother-in-police. My driver'south license and social security number were phony. I never voted; never paid taxes. My birth document, abort sheet, and my service record from the Army were all that existed to prove to the authorities I was always alive.
- See, the hardest matter for me was leaving the life. I all the same beloved the life. And we were treated similar movie stars with musculus. Nosotros had it all, merely for the asking. Our wives, mothers, kids, everybody rode forth. I had newspaper bags filled with jewelry stashed in the kitchen. I had a sugar basin full of coke next to the bed. Annihilation I wanted was a phone call away. Free cars. The keys to a dozen hideout flats all over the metropolis. I'd bet xx, thirty grand over a weekend and then I'd either blow the winnings in a week or become to the sharks to pay back the bookies. Didn't matter. It didn't mean anything. When I was bankrupt I would go out and rob some more than. We ran everything. We paid off cops. We paid off lawyers. We paid off judges. Everybody had their easily out. Everything was for the taking. And now it's all over. And that'southward the hardest office. Today, everything is different. At that place'south no activity. I have to wait effectually like everyone else. Can't even get decent food. Correct after I got hither, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I'm an average nobody. I become to live the residue of my life like a schnook.
Karen Hill [edit]
- 1 nighttime, Bobby Vinton sent united states of america champagne. There was nix like information technology. I didn't think there was anything strange in whatever of this. Yous know, a twenty-i-year-old kid with such connections. He was an heady guy. He was really nice. He introduced me to everybody. Everybody wanted to be dainty to him. And he knew how to handle it.
- I know in that location are women, like my best friends, who would have gotten out of there the minute their boyfriend gave them a gun to hide. But I didn't. I gotta admit the truth. It turned me on.
- Well, we weren't married to 9-to-five guys, simply the first fourth dimension I realized how different was when Mickey had a hostess political party. They had bad skin and wore also much make-upward. I mean, they didn't wait very skilful. They looked beat-up. And the stuff they wore was thrown together and cheap. A lot of pant suits and double knits. And they talked almost how rotten their kids were and about beating them with broom handles and leather belts. But that the kids still didn't pay any attending...After a while, it got to be all normal. None of information technology seemed like crimes. It was more like Henry was enterprising and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while the other guys were sitting on their asses waiting for manus-outs. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons. They were blue-collar guys. The merely way they could brand extra money, real extra coin, was to get out and cut a few corners...We were all so very close. I mean, there were never whatsoever outsiders around. Absolutely never. And being together all the time made everything seem all the more normal.
- We always did everything together and we always were in the same oversupply. Anniversaries, christenings. We only went to each other's houses. The women played cards, and when the kids were born, Mickey and Jimmy were ever the kickoff at the infirmary. And when we went to the Islands or Vegas to vacation, we ever went together. No outsiders, e'er. It got to be normal. It got to where I was even proud that I had the kind of husband who was willing to exit and take chances his neck just to get us the trivial extras.
- But nevertheless I couldn't injure him. How could I hurt him? I couldn't even bring myself to go out him. The truth was that no matter how bad I felt I was still very attracted to him. Why should I requite him to someone else? Why should she win?
Dialogue [edit]
- Jimmy: [To young Henry, later he gets cleared in court] Congratulations, hither'southward your graduation present [Puts coin in Henry's pocket]
- Henry: For what? I got pinched.
- Jimmy: Hey, everybody gets pinched, but you lot did information technology right. You told 'em nothing and they got nothing.
- Henry: I thought you'd be mad.
- Jimmy: I'g not mad, I'm proud of ya. Yous took your first pinch like a human, and yous learned the two nigh of import things in life. You listenin'? Never rat on your friends, and ALWAYS keep your mouth shut. [Gives Henry an affectionate light slap on the cheek and leads him out of the courtroom. Outside, Paulie and many of the other gangsters are waiting for him.]
- Paulie: Hey, you lot broke yer crimson! [The other gangsters cheer and congratulate Henry]
- Henry: You're a pistol! You're really funny. You're actually funny!
- Tommy: What do you lot mean I'grand funny?
- Henry: It's funny, you know. It's a adept story, information technology's funny, y'all're a funny guy!
- Tommy: [dangerously] What do you hateful? You lot hateful the way I talk? What?
- [Everyone becomes quiet]
- Henry: It's merely, you know, y'all're simply funny. It'due south funny, the way yous tell the story and everything.
- Tommy: Funny how? I hateful, what's funny about it?
- Anthony: Tommy, no, yous got it all wrong —
- Tommy: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. [to Henry] What did ya say? Funny how?
- Anthony: You're right.
- Henry: Just —
- Tommy: What?
- Henry: Just, ya know, you're funny.
- Tommy: Y'all mean, let me understand this, 'cause, ya know perchance it's me, I'one thousand a footling fucked upwardly possibly, but I'chiliad funny how? I hateful funny like I'm a clown? I charm you? I make you laugh, I'm hither to fuckin' charm you? What do you mean funny? Funny how? How am I funny?
- Henry: Just... y'all know, how y'all tell the story — what?
- Tommy: No, no, I don't know. You said it! How do I know? You said I'chiliad funny. How the fuck am I funny? What the fuck is so funny about me?! Tell me, tell me what's funny!

- [Anybody laughs]
- Tommy: Ya motherfucker! I near had him, I almost had him! You stuttering prick, yous! Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder nigh you lot sometimes, Henry. Yous may fold nether questioning!
- Karen: [narrating] Afterward awhile, information technology got to be all normal. None of information technology seemed like crime. It was more similar Henry was enterprising, and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while all the other guys were sitting on their asses, waiting for handouts. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons, they were blue-collar guys. The simply way they could make actress money, real actress money, was to get out and cut a few corners.
- [Cuts to Henry and Tommy hijacking a truck]
- Tommy: Where'south the strongbox, yous fuckin' varmint?!
- Karen: [narrating] We were all so very close. I mean, there were never any outsiders around. Absolutely never. And being together all the time made everything seem all the more normal.
- Karen: [narrating, at a makeup party with other wives] It was rough seeing the wives of other gangsters. They did not take intendance of themselves; they looked beat out up and their faces were caked with makeup. Nigh of the time was spent talking almost how rotten their kids were; how they decked them or whipped them with electrical wiring and the kids notwithstanding wouldn't pay attending. [afterward in her bedroom] I don't think I tin do it, Henry.
- Henry: Exercise what?
- Karen: This whole matter. Jeannie said her husband was sent to jail. God prevent, what if that happened to you?
- Henry: Bet she didn't tell you lot why her married man went at that place?
- Karen: How come?
- Henry: To get away from Jeannie! Karen, when it comes to the Mafia no ane goes to jail unless they want to. We crush the organisation and I got information technology all figured out. I am organized; I got my shit together. Y'all know who goes to jail? Nigger stickup men. Know why they get caught? Considering they fall asleep in the getaway machine.
- Tommy: Merely don't become bustin' my assurance, Billy, okay?
- Baton: Hey, Tommy, if I was gonna pause your balls, I'd tell you to get abode and go your shine box. [To his friends] Now this child, this child was corking. They, they used to telephone call him Spitshine Tommy. I swear to God! At present he'd make your shoes look like fuckin' mirrors. 'Scuse my language. He was terrific, he was the best. He fabricated a lot of coin, too. Salud, Tommy!
- Tommy: No more than shines, Billy.
- Billy: What?
- Tommy: I said no more shines. Peradventure yous didn't hear about it, yous've been away a long fourth dimension; they didn't go up there and tell you. I don't shine shoes anymore.
- Billy: Relax, will ya? Yous flipped correct out, what'south got into you? I'm breakin' your assurance a little flake, that's all. I'm only kiddin' with ya.
- Tommy: Sometimes you don't sound like yous're kidding, you know? There'south a lotta people around...
- Billy: Tommy, I'chiliad but kiddin' with you. We're having a party and I only came home, and I haven't seen you lot in a long fourth dimension, and I'1000 breakin' your balls, and right away you're getting fuckin' fresh. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend yous.
- Tommy: I'one thousand lamentable too. It'south okay. No problem.
- Billy: Okay, salud. [moment of silence as he takes a drink] Now go home and get ya fuckin' shinebox!
- Tommy: [smashes his glass in acrimony] Motherfuckin' mutt! You, you fuckin' piece of shit...! [Henry and Jimmy restrain him]
- Billy: [taunting] Yeah, yeah, aye, come on, come on! Come on! Allow him go!
- Tommy: Henry, he bought his fucking push button! That false old tough guy! You bought your fucking push! Go on that motherfucker here, continue him here! [leaves]
- Tommy: Spider, that bandage on your foot is bigger than your fucking head. Next affair you know he'll have one of these fucking walkers. But y'all tin can all the same dance. Requite us a couple of fucking steps, Spider. Y'all fucking bullshitter, you. Tell the truth. You want sympathy, is that right, sweetie?
- Spider: Why don't you lot go fuck yourself, Tommy?
- [Everyone, just Tommy, laughs]

Don't take no shit off nobody! A guy shoots him in the foot, he tells him to get fuck himself. Tommy, you lot gonna let this fucking punk go away with that? What'southward this world coming to?

- Henry: What is incorrect with you?!
- Jimmy: What is the fucking matter with you lot?! What, are you stupid or what?! I was kidding with yous. Are you a sick maniac?

- Paulie: She'south hysterical. Very excited. She's wild. And y'all got to take it easy. You got children. I'm not saying go dorsum to her this minute, but you got to get dorsum. Yous got to keep up appearances.
- Jimmy: I got the 2 of them come to my business firm every mean solar day commiserating, the ii of them. I just can't have information technology. I can't do it, Henry. I tin't do it. Nobody says yous tin't do what you want. Nosotros all know that. This is what information technology is. Nosotros know what information technology is. You have to do what'due south correct. Yous have to go home to the family unit. Y'all got to go home, okay? Await at me. You got to go home. Smarten up.

- Henry: What am I doing hither? Where am I? I'm in jail. I can't stop people from coming to run into me.
- Karen: Adept. Let her sneak this stuff every week. [Karen dangles a bag of illegal drugs in front him] Let her fight these bastards every week!
- Henry: Look what you're doing! End information technology!

- Henry: Karen, It's going to be okay.
- Karen: Yep? Fifty-fifty Paulie, since he got out, I've never seen him. I never see anybody anymore.
- Henry: It'southward only you and me. That's what happens when you go abroad. I told you that we're on our own. Forget everybody else. Forget Paulie. As long every bit he's on parole, he doesn't desire anybody doing anything.
- Karen: I can't exercise it.
- Henry: Aye, yous can. Karen, Listen to me. All I need is for y'all to bring me this stuff. I got a guy in here from Pittsburgh who'll aid me motility it. Believe me, in a month we're gonna be fine. We won't need anybody.
- Karen: I'g agape. I'thousand afraid if Paulie finds out...
- Henry: Or I but say, Don't worry about him. He is not helping the states out. Is he putting any food on the table? We've gotta aid each other. Nosotros've only gotta-- Listen, Nosotros've gotta be really careful while we do it.

- Karen: What? You lot have a meeting with your parole officer tommorow.
- Henry: Don't worry, they owe me $xv,000. Who wants to go to Uncle Paulie's?
- Children cheer. Cut to Paulie's house where people accept a big dinner. Afterward Paulie speaks to Henry in private
- Paulie: I practice not want whatsoever more of that shit.
- Henry: I have no idea what'southward going on here.
- Paulie: I mean the drugs! I do non want any more of that junk.
- Henry: Paulie, why would I desire to get mixed up in that?
- Paulie: But don't practise it. I am not talking near what you did in the can. You get a pass for that. In in that location you had to do what yous had to practice to support your family unit. I am talking about here and now. I practice non want to end upwardly like Gribbs. Gribbs got twenty years simply for maxim adept morning to some scuzz who was selling junk behind his back! Gribbs is lxx years old; the poor man is going to die in prison. So I am warning everyone, information technology could be my son, information technology could be anyone.
- [Cut to Henry making cocaine]
- Henry: [voiceover] It took me ii weeks of sneaking the stuff around, but when I did, it was a real score. In a month I had a down payment on my business firm and things were rolling. I knew equally long as the cash kept rolling in; Paulie would never discover out.
- Henry: [sniveling] Paulie, I am really pitiful.
- Paulie: Yous fucked upward skillful. You looked me in the eye and treated me like shit; like I was nobody.
- Henry: I couldn't come to you; not later what you said to me. I was aback and so; I am aback now. I swear on my kids, I am clean. But I got nowhere else to go. I could really use some help now.
- Paulie: Accept this.
- [Paulie pulls a wad of greenbacks out of his pocket and hands it to Henry]
- Henry: Thank you lot.
- Paulie: And now I accept to turn my dorsum on y'all. In that location is no other way.
- Henry: [narrating] My reward for a lifetime of service to Paulie: $3,200. It was not even enough to pay for my casket.
- Henry enters a diner
- Henry{as narrator}: I got at that place fifteen minutes early, Jimmy was already in that location waiting for me.
- Jimmy: All my life I said, do not talk on the phone. Now you see why? Do not worry, I think you stand a skillful chance of chirapsia this case.
- Jimmy: There was a kid we knew, turned out to exist a rat.
- Henry: Actually?
- Jimmy: Yeah. Plant him hiding in Florida. How would you experience near going with Anthony, have care of that guy?
- [Jimmy slips a message with data. Screen freeze-frames]
- Henry: [narrating] Jimmy never asked me to whack a guy before. Now in the midst of all this he is request me to go to Florida and do a hit with Anthony? [Screen resumes] That is when I knew I would take never returned from Florida live.
