Prior to their operation of the song that night, Schwartz left Babyface'due south name off the nomination submission sheet. He felt that because the additions Babyface added to the song were non featured in the actual flick version, he did non deserve writing credits. Yet, while Babyface did non receive the Oscar, Carey and Houston performed his version of the song, because they were more familiar with information technology than the i in the film. Prior to their performance at the Academy Awards, they sang it on Nov 26, 1998, on The Oprah Winfrey Prove, promoting the song, too as both their albums.

Background and recording [edit]

It's sort of a message vocal. It's what 'Prince of Egypt' is virtually, Moses. If we were ever going to come up together on any kind of record, this is definitely the right one, and really the coolest thing to me is that subsequently all of the drama and everybody making information technology like nosotros had a rivalry, she was just actually cool and we had a really good fourth dimension in the studio. Nosotros had fun. And so, if nothing else, information technology was a good feel... and diva-ism, whatever."

—Carey, on working with Houston in the studio, during an interview with Vibe.[3]

When Carey compiled her offset compilation endeavor, #i's, "When You Believe" was included in the track listing. Co-ordinate to Carey, the song was included because she felt it was "a miracle" that she and Houston collaborated on a record.[4] During the development of All That Glitters (a film Carey was working on at the time, later known as Glitter), she had been introduced to DreamWorks co-possessor Jeffrey Katzenberg, who asked her if she would record the song "When Yous Believe" for the soundtrack of the animated film The Prince of Egypt.[iii] Houston, on the other paw, was introduced to the project through Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, with whom she had been collaborating on her album, My Love Is Your Love. After they were shown the film separately, both became very enthusiastic about participating in the project.[3]

The vocal was co-written by Stephen Schwartz and Kenneth Edmonds, who also produced the vocal.[4] Edmonds expressed how he went through more than than ane version of the song and described its production as a beautiful movie ballad that was something different from anything he, Carey, or Houston had always previously recorded. In an interview with Vibe, Carey said that she "liked [the song] the way it was". She had characterised it equally "a very big ballad simply in an inspirational fashion" and denied speculation that there had been past rivalry or antagonism between her and Houston prior to its recording: "I never fifty-fifty really talked to her until this. Nosotros never had whatever issues betwixt us. The media and everybody fabricated it an issue."[five] In an interview with Ebony, Houston spoke nearly her relationship with Carey:

I enjoyed working with her very much. Mariah and I got along very peachy. We had never talked and never sang together before. Nosotros simply had a chance for camaraderie, vocalizer-to-singer, creative person-to-artist, that kind of thing. Nosotros just laughed and talked and laughed and talked and sang in between that ... Information technology's proficient to know that ii ladies of soul tin can still be friends. We talked about doing other things together, enterprise-wise, which is cool, because she's got a proficient, vivid mind, that girl. She'due south a smart lady. I really similar Mariah.[6]

While the pair continued to limited their positive feelings for one some other, tabloids began writing the opposite.[4] There were claims that the two bore ill will against each other, and that they had to tape the song separately due to constant tension. While media speculation grew as the film'south release appointment drew near, both singers maintained that they had become close friends, and had only the nigh positive things to say nigh each other.[iv]

Lyrical content [edit]

The Prince of Arab republic of egypt is an adaptation of the Biblical story of the Exodus. "When You lot Believe" is sung in the film past characters Tzipporah and Miriam, and a chorus of people parting from the slavery of Egypt to the Red Sea and the Promised Land.[one] The protagonists of this carol recall tough times that take caused them to question their own faith: they have prayed for many nights to God, but those prayers accept seemed to remain unanswered, and now they wonder if their faith has been merely a waste of time. Even so, the main characters realize that although the times may be difficult, their religion should remain stiff.[4] As a bridge, a chorus of children sings excerpts of the Song of the Sea in Hebrew.

The original draft of the song used the lyric "y'all can practise miracles when yous believe", but this seemed to imply that the believer, not God, was responsible for performing miracles; the lyric was afterward changed to "there can be miracles when you believe".[7]

Houston had sung in a church choir while growing up, and Carey had always connected to her religion through music, peculiarly during whatsoever difficult times.[iv] This song became 1 of the many reasons that both singers were so interested in the projection. They each felt that spreading faith in God was an important and honorable aspect of their career.[four] While describing the vocal'due south lyrics and message, Houston said the post-obit in an interview with 'Ebony:

A powerful ballad; [songwriter] Stephen Schwartz is a genius. You lot have to exist a child of God to empathise the depth of this song. Mariah and I did it as we felt information technology. We both felt very continued to the vocal because of our background. What can I say? (It is) Merely a beautiful song. What a lyric! I tin't talk near information technology—simply listen to it.[6]

Composition [edit]

Originally, Schwartz equanimous the motion-picture show version of "When You Believe", which was sung in the film by the characters of Tzipporah (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Miriam (Sally Dworsky).[viii] It featured some dissimilar instrumentation from the original, and used a children's choir singing lines from the volume of Exodus (the Song of the Ocean) in Hebrew.

In club to give the song a wider radio and pop appeal, Edmonds changed some of the song's instrumentals and replaced the children's choir with a gospel one.[eight] His version was considered more "commercial" and would make the song "help sell the motion-picture show". Schwartz's original version was titled "When Y'all Believe", while Edmonds' enhanced version was titled "The Prince of Egypt (When Y'all Believe)".[8] "When You Believe" is a slow tempo ballad, which incorporates pop and contemporary R&B genres. A key alter separates Houston and Carey'southward solo parts in the vocal. During the last bridge and chorus, gospel inspired background singers join the song, giving it a "layered sound" while Houston and Carey's voice switch off belting the span. After "When Yous Believe" was written, Babyface added additional instrumentation, every bit well as a final bridge.[v]

The song is prepare in common time. Houston'due south verse is written in the key of B minor and features a bones chord progression of A-Thou1, and the vocal modulates to D major for her chorus. Her vocals in the song range from the notation of F 3 to F five. Carey'southward poesy is set in the same key, but the song changes to E major for her chorus. Her vocal range in the song spans from the low note of Due eastthree to the loftier notation of A 5 [9] The song'southward key changes once more in the last chorus, to F-sharp major. Steve Jones from United states Today chosen the song a "soaring duet" and felt that the vocal would exist able to appeal to many types of listeners and "cantankerous all genres."[x]

He added, "The 18-carat story in this track is the return of Houston, who sounds fantastic—as clear and confident as ever."[12] Some other editor, Paul Verna stated that information technology is a "high-powered" duet, and afterward highlighted the song while reviewing Houston's album.[thirteen] Daily Record said it is "ballsy".[xiv] Ebony noted it as "powerful".[15] "When You Believe" received a mixed review from David Browne, an editor from Entertainment Weekly.[16] He gave it a C-, and wrote "[the vocal has] so much sap, maple copse volition be jealous."
